bd route independance planche 2Growing up in France with Babar, Tintin and Asterix as comic books it is refreshing to see that Le marquis de Lafayette now can be added to the list. This is a novel way to teach both French and American students about the crucial role played by the French army in the liberation of America from the British and to follow step by step (starting with the Boston Tea party in 1773 and closing with the signature of the treaty of Versailles) the development of an alliance and friendship now over 230 years old.
In view of the Iraq war and the American boycott of French products that followed this comic book is a powerful visual and casual reminder of an alliance that led to the Independence of America as well as planted the seeds to the subsequent French revolution. It makes you realize that both France and America (which share their Independence celebration day only 10 days apart) were driven by the same thirst for freedom and independence.
An easy to read recapitulative at the end of the book highlights the yearly major landmarks in this war and explains the balance of power on land and at sea. It is a useful tool for students and parents to review the historical data and to highlight the major steps of the war. Numbers speak more than words especially the final listing of the French casualties at the end of the book (45 000 French soldiers who participated in the war, 5,000 died and 20,000 were injured.). Besides the well-known Marquis de la Fayette, General de Rochambeau, George Washington, Montgomery and British Admiral Byron, this comic book introduces names whose role was significant as well. Among them, Monsieur de Vergennes, Monsieur de Sartine and Admiral d’Estaing. It is entertaining to see these famous figures evolved in the costumes of the time, speaking using expressions of the time. The changes of scenery from the Castle of Versailles to Newport RI, Hartford Ct, and the battlefields keep you reading. No details of the daily life of the soldiers is spared, from them getting small pox, to fighting in the trenches.
Finally, the author adds a romantic thread to his historical story with the romance between Lieutenant d’Oraigny and Mademoiselle Langiviere. With them he cleverly introduces us to the daily courting habit and entertainment of the time and he gives us a refreshing change of scenery from the political intrigue and the battlefield.
“La Route de l’Independance is a successful historical comic book, punchily written. It is easy to read and maintains the reader’s interest, while fulfilling the mission of the Societe des Cincinatti to keep alive the essential role played by the French and its army to liberate America from the British and to renew the Franco-American friendship that ensued.“
